Our flow-state validation study is out on arXiv
A prefrontal-cortex EEG model for the flow state, developed with the University of Turin and UCLA.
“Quantifying Flow State Dynamics: A Prefrontal Cortex EEG-Based Model Validation Study” is now available as a preprint on arXiv (2506.16838). Authors come from the University of Turin's departments of Psychology, Economics & Statistics and ESOMAS, from UCLA's Department of Biostatistics, and from Sporthype.
The study validates the Flow State Index implemented in Holytics. Using a portable EEG device, the team collected 84 recordings with professional golf coaches during visualization, focused-attention meditation and real shot execution, alongside a ten-item questionnaire.
The index computed from prefrontal activity matched athletes' self-reported experience with a gap of about 9%. Preliminary tests were also run in tennis and in non-sport contexts such as gaming and mindfulness practice.
The paper is a preprint and has not yet been peer reviewed.
